Fall Scarecrow & Día de los Muertos Competition returns to Big Bear

Visit Big Bear has officially announced the return of its highly anticipated autumn celebration: the Fall Scarecrow & Día de los Muertos Competition, running from September 30 through November 3, 2026.

This community-wide event transforms the mountain valley into a vibrant, festive autumn destination, blending classic fall imagery with the rich cultural traditions of Día de los Muertos. Both local businesses and residents are invited to showcase their creativity and compete across multiple categories for a share of over $10,000 in total prizes.

Competition Categories & Divisions
Participants can enter their custom creations into both Business and Resident Divisions across three distinct artistic styles:
  • Scarecrows: Traditional, creative, or spooky autumn displays.
  • Ofrendas: Beautifully crafted altars honoring loved ones, complete with traditional decorations.
  • Calacas: Playful, decorative skeleton figures celebrating the holiday’s heritage.
Community Involvement & Public Voting
The competition brings together locals and tourists alike to explore Big Bear’s autumn transformation. Visitors and community members can tour the mountain community to view the unique installations. Public participation is highly encouraged, as voting will determine the standout winners in each division.
