The Big Bear Valley American Association of University Women (AAUW) will be having an informational meeting on February 13th at 2:15 in the Media Room at Big Bear High School for sophomore and junior girls interested in the 2019 Zoo Experience. This is open to all sophomore and junior girls, not just Big Bear High School students.
At the informational meeting, students will meet the Big Bear Alpine curator and AAUW representatives, view a video from last year’s Zoo Experience, and pick up applications for this year’s camp.
The 2019 Zoo Experience is a one-week, internship-style day camp to be held July 22nd – 26th at the Big Bear Alpine Zoo, which coincides with National Zookeepers Week. Students will work with the Big Bear Alpine zookeepers, explore careers in animal sciences, learn animal photography and participate in hands-on learning.
“The Zoo Experience” program seeks to break through barriers for women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and math, while exposing them to careers in the field of animal sciences. Currently, women account for only a minority of managerial positions in zoos. AAUW is dedicated to inspiring women to become leaders and opening their minds to STEM fields that they may have not considered as viable careers.
AAUW, whose mission it is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research, is creating this unique program in conjunction with the Big Bear Alpine Zoo and hopes to sponsor the four, high school girls in 2019.
