“This drought emergency is over, but the next drought could be around the corner,” said California Governor Edmund G. Brown. “Conservation must remain a way of life.” With that warning in mind, the Sierra Club Big Bear Group will host its 15th Annual Sierra Club Big Bear Group Big Bear Xeriscape Garden Tour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 15.

The Oxford Dictionary defines Xeriscape as, “A garden or landscape style that requires little or no irrigation or other maintenance.” Following that definition, the theme for this year’s Big Bear Valley Xeriscape Garden Tour is “Water Conservation…A Big Bear Way of Life,” with the focus for the Sierra Club Big Bear Group Big Bear Valley Xeriscape Garden Tour on Big Bear’s unique water situation and how everyone can do their part to conserve water while creating beautiful and exciting yards and gardens.

Participants may register for the free, self-guided driving Sierra Club Big Bear Group Big Bear Valley Xeriscape Garden Tour between 9 a.m. and noon at Eminger’s Mountain Nursery, 41223 Big Bear Blvd., Big Bear Lake, across the street from the Denny’s Restaurant.

The Sierra Club Big Bear Group Big Bear Valley Xeriscape Garden Tour offers the opportunity to view landscaping, discover drought tolerant plants and learn how to knock dollars from your monthly water bill while creating a beautiful drought-tolerant garden. One of the homes features a landscape that is both low-water use and fire-wise, meaning it follows Big Bear Fire Department guidelines to help ensure safety during a wildfire.

The tour will once again include the Big Bear Department of Water and Power’s Xeriscape Demonstration Garden on Fox Farm Road, in front of the Community Garden. Native plant expert Orchid Black will be at the garden to answer questions about Xeriscaping. Also at the demonstration garden will be the Big Bear Homeowner Expo and a no-cost native/drought-tolerant plant exchange.
